What is the meaning of RF circuit boards, high frequency circuit boards and microwave circuit boards?

RF circuit boards, high-frequency circuit boards and microwave circuit boards are different types of printed circuit boards (PCBs) distinguished by their application in the frequency range and specific design requirements.

General PCBs:

FR Circuit Boards (FR-4 Circuit Boards): 

FR circuit boards are a common printed circuit board material, with glass fibre cloth as the reinforcement and epoxy resin as the resin system, and have flame retardant properties.FR-4 is a material class defined by the industry standard NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association), where "FR" stands for Flame Retardant, and the number "4" denotes the specific classification of the material.FR-4 boards are widely used in various electronic applications. 4 boards are widely used in various electronic equipment, because of its good mechanical properties, electrical characteristics and processability, suitable for the manufacture of multilayer PCBs.

RF Circuit Boards: 

RF circuit boards are circuit boards designed for radio frequency (Radio Frequency) applications, usually for the transmission and reception of signals. These boards are capable of handling frequencies ranging from approximately 3 kHz to 300 MHz, and are designed with signal integrity and impedance control in mind to ensure efficient transmission of radio signals. They are widely used in wireless communication equipment, broadcasting equipment, antenna design and other fields.


High Frequency Circuit Boards: 

High frequency circuit boards are circuit boards that are used to process higher frequency signals, usually for applications in the frequency range above 300MHz. The design requirements for these boards are more stringent because as the frequency increases, signal attenuation and distortion problems become more prominent. High-frequency circuit boards are usually made of low dielectric constant and low-loss materials to reduce losses during signal transmission and to improve signal transmission efficiency. They are widely used in high-speed digital circuits, satellite communications, wireless networks and other high-speed transmission areas.

Microwave Circuit Boards:

Microwave circuit boards are circuit boards used in the microwave frequency band, whose operating frequency is usually above 1GHz, even up to the millimetre wave band. Microwave circuit boards need to have very low dielectric loss and good thermal stability to ensure the quality of signal transmission at high frequencies and system reliability. Special materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and ceramic composites are often used for these circuit boards, which play a key role in radar systems, satellite communications, Wi-Fi base stations and other microwave communication systems.

Overall, the main differences between these three types of circuit boards are the different frequency ranges in which they are designed and applied, as well as the different materials and design criteria used to meet the performance requirements in these frequency ranges. As frequencies increase, so do the requirements for the electrical characteristics and structural design of circuit board materials.
