Introduction to Copper Clad Laminate Sheets Commonly Used for RF, Microwave, and High Frequency Boards

When designing PCB circuits at microwave frequencies, the key characteristics that define the performance of RF, microwave, and high frequency printed circuit board laminates include dielectric constant (Dk), loss factor (Df), coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), thermal coefficient of dielectric constant (TCDk), and thermal conductivity.

The most familiar high frequency material to RF, microwave, and high-frequency sheet laminates users is probably polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a synthetic thermoplastic fluoropolymer with excellent dielectric properties at microwave frequencies. Below is a brief overview of the major laminates sheet suppliers we are familiar with, as each material is processed a little differently, it is critical to understand exactly how these materials will be affected by each process.
